Eileen Gray (1879-1976)
The Bibendum Chair designed by Eileen Gray is a captivating harmonious piece with its majestic size yet oozes charm and comfort. This adaptatio is handcrafted with fine Italian leather supported by a high quality stainless steel frame. Eileen Gray, (1879-1976 ), realized her interest in furniture design when she left London’s Slade School of Design to study lacquer under the guidance of painter D. Charles. In 1902 Gray traveled to Paris to continue these studies. By 1908, she was ready for her first exhibit, which attracted the attention of Jacque Doucet, a couturiere, art connoisseur and collector. Gray designed a few pieces for him, which turned out to be her only signed and dated creations. She presented her furniture and accessories at the Jean Desert Gallery, which she established in 1922. Shortly thereafter, persuaded by Le Corbusier among others, she turned her interests to architecture. Even well into her later years, Gray continued to create, rehabilitating her St. Tropez hayloft into a summer home for herself at the age of 80. Before her long life ended, Gray was honored with a retrospective of her work at the Musee des Arts Decoratifs in Paris.
