Quick Overview

Why should you have to find out the time from the digital screen on your microwave? Do kids even learn how to tell time on a non-digital clock anymore? Ensure that they do with style. George Nelson's Clocks are an iconic example of mid-century modern design. The spirit of emerging modernism has been captured and lives on in this very functional and geometric work of art.

Brand new to the George Nelson line is the re-edition of the Kite Clock. Our version of the clock looks equally as stunning and contemporary now as when it was first conceived.

Product Description

Design: George Nelson, 1950.

The Nelson clocks were first born from a festive evening of collaboration.... George Nelson recalls: 'And there was one night when the ball clock got developed... Noguchi came by, and Bucky Fuller came by... we started making doodles. Then Bucky sort of brushed Noguchi aside. He said, 'This is a good way to do a clock,' and he made some utterly absurd thing. Everybody was taking a crack at it, pushing each other aside and making scribbles.... and the next morning there was this roll of drafting paper and somewhere in this roll there was the ball clock." These clocks are produced from the original design documents from the Nelson archive with the blessings of the George Nelson estate.

This finely crafted re-edition clock by designer George Nelson showcases a diamond/"kite" pattern with bold colors and minimal detailing: the face is divided in half with black and white halves, layered with contrasting beaded hour marks and red hour, minute and second hands.

With the diversity of materials used and their sculptural shapes, Nelson's clocks embody the joie de vivre of the 1950s. To this day, his wall clocks remain a refreshing alternative to the usual timekeepers. The Vitra Design Museum presents a re-edition of the designs so cherished by collectors in true to the original form. Vitra Design Museum Collection.
